When people ask me how I dress for Christmas, it always stumps me a bit. I’ve never really been into full-on party wear (I feel a bit done up) and I like to be pretty relaxed on the big day itself too. But I also like to feel special, it is an occasion after all. So when The White Company invited me to take part in their festive style challenge, I knew I’d be steering a fairly careful course between the two.
Actually it’s quite handy that The White Company are really good at the luxurious knits and loungewear thing but, come this time of year especially, do a really nice line in little black dresses and separates. Needless to say, I combined the two. Like many people I’m having a real thing for midi-length pleated skirts and this is one of the most beautifully fluid versions around while the sharp, narrow pleats make it look a bit more special and sophisticated. I love the way it moves when you walk and the underskirt keeps things decent.
And to tone it down, I love the contrast of a big, long, chunky knit worn over the top. This one has a subtle silver yarn woven through it that just gives it a bit of sparkle and I think the deep V-neck stops it looking too casual. I’ve worn it with quite low key accessories for a daytime look here but you could really ramp things up with some bolder jewellery if you’re heading to a party and maybe swap in some strappy heels and a glittery clutch.
The best bit – neither of these pieces scream Christmas, so I know I’ll be able to wear them lots in the new year too. The skirt would definitely work for the office with a crisp white shirt or tucked in top and well, to be honest, I’ve been wearing that sweater all weekend already.
