Question: which one item can you wear on the school run, to the office, on the beach and to a party? Yes, the answer to all your superwoman problems is of course, a cape!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALiving, as I do, up North and with the eternal affliction that I always feel a draft, I spend most of the year in a coat or jacket of sorts. While I love the summer and the sun on my face, balmy days seem few and far between around here (Harrogate is well known for being windy). All of which is great for a borderline coat addict like me. I don’t need an excuse to buy another coat and I’ve already got my eye on a couple for when autumn rolls around.

But until then, and presuming we will actually enjoy some semblance of summer, I’m going to put my money on capes. A bit like the ‘coatigan’ idea, the cape is its flamboyant sibling and always has its passport ready to be whisked away on holiday. And yet it will also look cool and a bit boho in less exotic climes and more everyday situations. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Details: Cape: Rumour London via LUXFIX / Dungarees: Next (I cut the bottoms off) / Tee: Topshop / Sandals: H&M / Sunglasses: Dorothy Perkins / Bag: Great Plains

This one is from Rumour London, a label I discovered via online fashion retailer LUX FIX. Made from luxurious merino wool, it has just the right weight to stay in place, whether tied with a belt or just casually thrown on. As you can see I wore it with quite a casual outfit here, over my black denim dungarees, a simple grey tee and some ghillie sandals. But that’s the slightly magical, transformative power of a good cape; it can add a bit of wow factor to anything.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And the best bit, is that come Autumn, you could still be wearing your cape with a thick jumper underneath and some fantastic boots, which is great for coat-phobes who want to prolong the feeling of summer for as long as possible (though why on earth you’d want to do that I’m not sure!).

Take a look at the LUX FIX website, it’s definitely worth a browse and there’s a sale on at the moment too!

Ha, sorry Jo. Good luck with the cape-wearing, I imagine you’d look fab in one xx

Alison //

LOVE this look, Kathryn. You look so so fab. The cape is the perfect thing to sling on when you feel that chill but then shrug off when the sun comes out. Off to check out that brand now….

Some capes are really unflattering shapes, but I love the structure of this one. Being pregnant, I love a good throw-on garment, I’m off to check it out.

This is gorgeous! It looks perfect for winter… I had a topshop poncho that I lived in when I was at uni, and I could see myself getting similarly obsessed with a cape x

Not so great now we’re having a mini heatwave but i still think a lightweight one works as a nice cover-up in summer too xx

Laura //

I absolutely love this outfit Kat – I am a huge fan of monochrome as it is and this cape is awesome!! Honestly I love it and it’s made me think I really need one in my wardrobe

I would definitely recommend grabbing one for summer/autumn in between days xx

You look amazing in these photos and I think clever lady, you may just have found me the answer to keep me and the (growing) bump warm this autumn / winter coat. A cape! Now why didn’t I think of that… X
